ABSTRACT: Conventional energy efficient fluorescent and LED light in the 3000K – 4000K CCT range emit 15-25% of their irradiance in bio-active blue wavelengths which have significant impact on human health and performance. During the day, these conventional light sources improve alertness, vigilance, and productivity. However, exposure to blue-rich light during the evening and overnight hours has been correlated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, in animal and human studies.
We have developed LED light sources that regulate bio-active blue light over 24-hours and emit white light (3200K CCT, CRI >80) at night with 90% less bio-active blue content than conventional LED lights. To investigate the benefits of removing the bio-active blue content at night, in a cross-over study, we compared 11 healthy human volunteers exposed to either conventional LED lighting or to blue irradiance depleted CIRCADIAN® LED lighting for two – three successive 12-hour night shifts.
Under the blue-rich conventional LED lights the subjects developed significant increases in insulin resistance and in appetite throughout the study. No significant increases in insulin resistance or appetite were seen after night shifts illuminated by bio-active blue depleted CIRCADIAN Light.
January 24, 2017: Martin Moore-Ede, MD, PhD, CEO of CIRCADIAN Light spoke at the Owens Corning Sustainability Summit, in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Moore-Ede addressed how new advances in circadian LED lighting technology can meet energy efficiency standards and optimize 24/7 workforce productivity, health, and safety.
October 22-23, 2016: >Martin Moore-Ede, MD, PhD, CEO of CIRCADIAN Light was an invited speaker at the LESA/IES conference at the 2016 IES Annual Conference, Orlando, Florida. Dr. Moore-Ede spoke on CIRCADIAN Light for the 24/7 Workplace at the workshop "TRANSFORMING HEALTHCARE AND WELL-BEING THROUGH LIGHTING organized by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) in conjunction with the RPI National Science Foundation Center for Lighting Enabled Systems & Applications (LESA). This specialized two day workshop brought together a small but select group of key experts to provide essential input to a strategic roadmap for developing future lighting systems and evidence-based research to promote the positive impact of lighting on patients and providers in a healthcare setting.
